Malawi's President Banda shakes Cabinet

Malawi President Joyce Banda. Malawi President Joyce Banda has stripped off her Vice-President Hastings Khumbo Kachali the ministerial post of  Health Minister and fired her party Vice-President Cassim Chilumpha from the Cabinet. It is believed that President Banda removed Mr Kachali from Cabinet following his involvement in the snatching of hospital beds from one clinic to another, where he was campaigning for a member of his party to be elected as MP. It is not known why she removed her party Vice-President from the Energy ministerial position. In early September, Mr Kachali ordered the removal of beds from one hospital to the other in his constituency, a development that astonished many across the country until they were eventually replaced. The  Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) launched an investigation into the scandal and found that ruling People’s Party (PP) candidate Raymond Nkhata used the beds as a campaign tool in the Mzimba by-elections held on Oc

Cameroon bans analogue broadcast equipment imports

Cameron has placed a ban on the importation of analogue broadcast equipment; a move designed to move the country’s media to migrate to using only digital equipment for broadcasting. All analogue signals would have been gotten rid of if the plan goes underway as authorities say by 17 June 2015. A decision from Prime Minister Philemeon Yang, signed in mid-November but made public only recently, instituted the ban and laid down conditions for digital broadcasting and transmission in Cameroon, taking effect from June 2015. As from July next year, the sale of analogue equipment such as analogue radio and television receivers will be outlawed all over Cameroon. Public and private audiovisual media using the banned analogue broadcast equipment will have to meet the terms of the law within one year or pay punitive penalties. The digital video broadcasting terrestrial (DVB-T2) will equally be made uniform in Cameroon and digital compression modes in use will now be: H.264

Malawi prostitutes kill non-paying clients

Prostitutes in the northern Malawian city of Mzuzu are accused of killing two clients by drowning them in a dam after they failed to pay for sex, police said on Tuesday. "After a long time of drinking, the deceased had sexual intercourse with the sex workers and failed to settle the bill," police spokesperson Norah Chimwala told AFP. "The sex workers drowned them in a dam... they failed to swim." Chimwala could not say how much the bill for sex was, but prostitutes in urban centres charge around six dollars. Police identified the deceased as Mlumbo Chamvula and Osward Tembo, both 20 and hailing from Mzimba district.
