Kidnappers free mother of Nigeria Finance minister

Nigeria's Finance minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.  The mother of Nigeria's Finance minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been released five days after she was kidnapped, Delta State governor Emmanuel Uduaghan has told the BBC. Kamene Okonjo, an 82-year-old retired professor, was seized from her home in southern Nigeria on Sunday. Kidnapping is common in southern Nigeria, where it is a lucrative criminal enterprise. It is not clear if Prof Okonjo was held for political or financial gain. Dozens of people were reportedly detained on Thursday during the search for Prof Okonjo. Earlier this week, Finance ministry spokesman Paul Nwabuikwu said that Mrs Okonjo-Iweala had been threatened recently. He confirmed Prof Okonjo's release, but gave no further details, AP news agency reported. Police spokesman Frank Mba told the AFP news agency Prof Okonjo was "in good health". China Daily newspaper launches Africa edition

The new paper hopes to build on China's close relationship with Africa China Daily, China's biggest English-language newspaper, has launched an African edition - the latest of several Chinese media initiatives in Africa. The state-run weekly, which also comes in digital form, aims to explain "the relationship between China and the African continent," its editor says. China's CCTV and Xinhua news agency already have operations in the region. The country has a growing economic role in Africa, including telecommunications and infrastructure investments. The newspaper is being published in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. "The relationship between China and the African continent is one of the most significant relationships in the world today," said the paper's publisher and editor-in-chief, Zhu Ling. Former Madagascar President Marc Ravalomanana. He has opted out of the country's 2013 presidential election. Former Madagascar President Marc Ravalomanana has said that he would not contest next year’s presidential election following a request by the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Mr Ravalomanana, who currently lives in exile in South Africa, said in Dar es Salaam, his intention was to see Madagascar return to normalcy after a three-year political crisis. “What I want is to go back to Madagascar to continue, peacefully, with my business activities and help rebuild the country, together with my fellow countrymen and all wellwishers,” Mr Ravalomanana, who turned 63 Wednesday, told a joint press conference with President Jakaya Kikwete at State House. Briefing reporters earlier, President Kikwete said last weekend’s SADC Extraordinary Summit in Dar es Salaam resolved to request both Mr Ravalomanana and the incumbent Madagascar President Andry Rajoeli

The commission said that President Mahama had won 50.7 per cent against opposition leader Nana Akufo-Addo on 47.74 per cent.
