Former Madagascar leader opts out of presidential race

Former Madagascar President Marc Ravalomanana. He has opted out of the country's 2013 presidential election.
Former Madagascar President Marc Ravalomanana has said that he would not contest next year’s presidential election following a request by the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Mr Ravalomanana, who currently lives in exile in South Africa, said in Dar es Salaam, his intention was to see Madagascar return to normalcy after a three-year political crisis.
“What I want is to go back to Madagascar to continue, peacefully, with my business activities and help rebuild the country, together with my fellow countrymen and all wellwishers,” Mr Ravalomanana, who turned 63 Wednesday, told a joint press conference with President Jakaya Kikwete at State House.
Briefing reporters earlier, President Kikwete said last weekend’s SADC Extraordinary Summit in Dar es Salaam resolved to request both Mr Ravalomanana and the incumbent Madagascar President Andry Rajoelina, not to contest the election scheduled for next May.
“We resolve that as part of the solution to the current problems in Madagascar, both President Rajoelina and Mr Ravalomanana should not contest the next election. This should reduce, if not end, the animosity, bitterness and tensions in the political atmosphere of that country,” President Kikwete said.
Consultations with President Rajoelina to urge him not to contest in the May election were continuing, but Mr Ravalomanana has endorsed the SADC summit’s decision, and urged President Rajoelina to follow suit and announce that he too would not contest.
He did not rule out taking part in politics in the future.
