Kenya's President Mwai Kibaki.
Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki arrived in Malawi for a three-day official visit where he is expected to discuss trade and bilateral ties with his counterpart Joyce Banda.
The two are also expected to discuss the reopening of the Malawi High Commission in Kenya which was closed 10 years ago.
President Joyce Banda and Vice-President Khumbo Kachale welcomed Kibaki, the third African president to visit Malawi since she took over office.
Kibaki who addressed an impromptu press conference at the airport said the visit was important, as the two countries share mutual ties.
"You will come to know the reasons why I am in this country. We will keep you informed," he told journalists.
According to Steve Nhlane, the Malawi presidential spokesperson, Kibaki is expected to lay a foundation stone for a by-pass road.
Recently President Banda announced plans by her government to re-open its high commission office in Nairobi as part of strengthening relations with Kenya.
Though the office was closed 10 year ago, the property and structures have remained intact.
Kibaki is the third African leader to visit Malawi since Banda's ascension to office. Nigeria's Goodluck Jonathan visited last year and Benin's President Boni Yayi came on January 15 this year on a two-hour visit.
The last time Kibaki was in Malawi was when he attend the burial of former president Bingu wa Mutharika in April 2012.
