IMF boss arrives in Malawi on landmark visit
International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Christine Lagarde. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) managing director Christine Lagarde landed in Malawi on Friday, marking the first ever visit by an IMF chief to the southern Africa nation. |
Ms Lagarde is to meet President Joyce Banda and her Cabinet in a closed-door session and later address the press.
She is also expected to meet civil society organisations, the business community, development partners and prominent Malawi women.
According to the schedule released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms Lagarde is also expected to visit Microloan Foundation (MLF) before addressing a joint press briefing with Finance minister Ken Lipenga and Reserve Bank of Malawi Governor Charles Chuka on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Mr Lipenga has said the IMF's chief visit has nothing to do with the planned January 17 protests over the high cost of living.
"The visit of the IMF chief to any country is of special significance. It entails engaging with the Fund on issues of significance to the welfare of the people. The coming itself signifies the level of confidence the Fund has on Malawi and its administration.
"It gives the president an opportunity to share with the Fund solutions to the current economic woes which Malawi has sailed through for over three years," Mr Lipenga said.
