A police outrider in Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe’s motorcade was burnt beyond recognition on Wednesday in the fourth fatal road accident involving the veteran ruler’s escort this year.
Police said the biker who was clearing traffic for the motorcade collided with a truck in Harare’s leafy suburb of Borrowdale where President Mugabe has his private residence in the morning.
“It was a fatal accident and next of kin are yet to be informed, so we can’t give the name of the deceased,” assistant police spokesperson Charity Charamba said on Thursday.
She said investigations were still underway to establish the cause of the accident.
The driver of the truck Mr Cliff Moyo told local media that he was hit as he tried to negotiate a turn.
“It was the first bike of the motorcade which was behind me and it hit the side of the truck,” he told the privately owned NewsDay newspaper.
“I was driving along Borrowdale Road and I wanted to turn right when I heard a loud sound and the next thing I saw was fire.”
In June this year, President Mugabe’s mortocade was involved in three accidents where as many people died on the spot while several others reportedly died days later.
All the three accidents occurred when the 88 year-old leader was travelling to his rural home west of Harare.
Police blame motorists who fail to make way for the fast moving cars in Harare’s congested roads for the accidents. Motorists who fail to heed the sirens of the outriders are often brutalised or even arrested.
Ordinary Zimbabweans have in the past complained about the excessive speed of the motorcade, which always consists of several cars and armed soldiers.
