Somalia President names newcomer as Prime Minister
| Newly elected Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mahmud (C) has named his Premier.
Mr Abdi Farah Shirdon alias Saaid is Somalia's newly appointed Prime Minister.
The Saturday appointment was announced by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud at a ceremony in Villa Somalia, the country's State House in Mogadishu.
Mr Shirdon is well known within the business circle in Somalia and has worked with UN agencies.
One of the immediate task for the premier is to constitute a new cabinet after his programme is endorsed by the Federal Parliament. Like the President, Shirdon is a newcomer to the Somali political scene.
“It is a pleasure for me to win the confidence of the president to assume the premiership,” said Mr. Shirdon, who pledged to uphold the rule of law.
The incoming Premier pledged to weed out corruption, nepotism and any other malpractices in the country.
Somalia’s transitional governments over the past eight years had been plagued by constitutional crisis and internal rifts.
The PM, just like President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud and Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Osman Jawari promised to refrain from controversy within the government to boost collaboration among the state institutions.
“I’ll make improvement of the national security as my priority number one, priority number two and priority number three...,” remarked Mr. Shirdon.
The new man is an economist who graduated from Somali National University and assumed both public and private managerial positions.
The wife
He is married to Ms Asha Haji Elmi, a legislator and a civil society activist. Ms Elmi also won the Right Livelihood Award (known as the alternative Nobel Prize) in 2008 as well as the Clinton Global Citizen Award.
